Cambodia eVisa facts for American travelers
| Decision point | Current planning answer |
|---|---|
| Visa required? | Yes for a visitor using a regular US passport |
| Common online category | Tourist eVisa Type T for eligible tourism |
| Tourist Visa Service Fee | USD 90 |
| Business Visa Service Fee | USD 105 |
| Normal processing | Three business days |
| Validity window | Three months from issue for entry |
| Permitted stay shown by portal | Up to one month |
| Entries | Single entry |
| Arrival declaration | Separate e-Arrival within seven days before arrival |
Validity and stay are not interchangeable. Three-month validity gives a window in which to enter. It does not authorize three months inside Cambodia. At arrival, inspect the immigration record and calculate departure from the admitted-until date, not from an airline itinerary or an assumed thirty nights.
Who should choose the Tourist eVisa Type T?
Type T fits a conventional leisure trip: Angkor Archaeological Park, Phnom Penh, the southern coast, family visits without work, or a holiday combined with neighboring countries. Applying before the trans-Pacific journey gives the airline and traveler a document to review before departure. It also avoids depending entirely on an arrival counter after a long flight.
A tourist eVisa is not permission to take paid employment, provide regular services, run a local business, undertake long-term study or stay indefinitely. A conference attendee, remote worker, volunteer, employee or investor should verify the correct category with a Cambodian embassy or immigration authority. Describing business activity as tourism can create problems even when the visit is brief.
US citizens with Cambodian heritage should not assume ordinary Type T is automatically the best route. Cambodia has nationality and special visa considerations that can depend on parentage and documentation. A Cambodian mission can review those facts. Likewise, a dual citizen must identify which passport will be presented at every stage and keep airline, visa and arrival records aligned with it.
Documents to prepare before starting
- Complete, undamaged United States passport valid for at least six months from arrival.
- Clear color image of the entire passport biographical page, including machine-readable lines.
- Recent front-facing portrait on a plain background without filters or heavy shadows.
- Email account that will remain accessible during the trip.
- Accepted debit or credit card and authorization for an international online transaction.
- Proposed arrival date, accommodation address and exact Cambodian entry port.
- Onward or return itinerary and travel insurance details for practical border readiness.
Enter the full name exactly as printed in the passport's visual and machine-readable zones. Do not replace a legal middle name with an initial, omit a suffix because an airline profile omits it, or use a nickname. Confirm passport number characters carefully; the letter O and zero, or the letter I and number one, are frequent sources of preventable errors.
Do not crop the passport image to the face alone. All edges should be visible and text should remain readable when enlarged. For the portrait, use a current image that resembles the traveler on arrival. Screenshots copied through messaging applications may lose resolution, so reopen the final upload and inspect it before payment.
How to apply from the United States
- Confirm the purpose. Decide that Type T matches genuine short tourism.
- Check passport validity. Count six months from the intended Cambodian arrival, not from the US departure date.
- Choose the port first. Verify that the Cambodian airport or land checkpoint accepts eVisa entry.
- Complete identity fields. Transcribe the US passport exactly and use the nationality shown by that passport.
- Upload original-quality files. Check focus, glare, edges, orientation and portrait recency.
- Review the charge. Our Tourist Visa application service fee is USD 90.
- Save the reference. Keep the confirmation number, receipt and submitted details.
- Inspect approval. Compare every field on the PDF with the physical passport.
- Complete e-Arrival. Submit it separately within seven days before landing.
- Prepare offline copies. Carry printed and downloaded records in case mobile data is unavailable.
Submission is not approval, and payment does not guarantee admission. Cambodian authorities make the visa and entry decisions. Avoid claims of guaranteed approval or invented emergency processing. If an application remains pending, use its genuine reference through the appropriate support channel rather than submitting multiple conflicting applications.
When should an American citizen apply?
The official processing period is normally three business days. The US travel advisory recommends applying online about seven calendar days ahead, and a larger buffer is sensible when dates are fixed. Applying one to two weeks before departure usually leaves room for image replacement, payment review, Cambodian holidays and time-zone differences.
Do not apply so early that the planned entry falls outside the three-month validity window. Work backward from Cambodia arrival, not from the first domestic flight in the United States. A traveler leaving Los Angeles late Monday can land in Asia on Wednesday because of the International Date Line; the Cambodian arrival date shown on the itinerary controls planning.
Business days follow Cambodia's calendar. A US federal workday is not necessarily a Cambodian processing day. Thanksgiving, Memorial Day or another American holiday does not determine the office schedule, while Khmer New Year or a Cambodian public holiday may affect timing. Treat a three-day estimate as normal service, not a last-minute promise.
Understanding price in US dollars
This application service lists USD 90 as the Tourist Type T Tourist visa service fee. Because an American card is already denominated in dollars, currency conversion may be minimal, but a bank can still classify the payment as international or decline it for fraud prevention. Check card alerts and do not repeatedly pay while a charge is merely pending.
A private application-support company may charge separately for form assistance, document review, reminders or customer service. That service charge is not a Cambodian Tourist visa service fee. A trustworthy checkout identifies the operator, shows the total before authorization, explains the service and provides terms. It must not imply that a larger payment buys influence over immigration.
Keep the receipt and approval together. If a charge appears unfamiliar, first compare the merchant descriptor with the site used and the confirmation email. Starting a chargeback while an application is under review can interrupt service. Genuine fraud concerns should still be raised promptly with the card issuer.
Entry ports and multi-country itineraries
The official portal currently lists Techo International Airport (KTI), Siem Reap Angkor International Airport (SAI) and Sihanoukville International Airport (KOS) for eVisa entry. Listed land checkpoints are Bavet in Svay Rieng and Tropaeng Kreal in Stung Treng. Poipet and Cham Yeam are marked temporarily closed for eVisa entry until further notice.
Do not choose a port by city name alone. Phnom Penh's airport code is now KTI, while SAI serves Siem Reap. Confirm the final Cambodian segment of the ticket. A connection in Seoul, Tokyo, Taipei, Bangkok, Singapore or Doha does not change the Cambodian entry point or the nationality used for the application.
Overland plans require extra care because a bus advertisement may name a destination rather than the checkpoint. Ask the operator for the exact border name. If traveling through Thailand, check current border and security advice immediately before departure; closures can change a route even when the eVisa itself remains valid. Build an alternative itinerary before committing to non-refundable transport.
Cambodia e-Arrival is a separate required step
Every traveler should complete the Cambodia e-Arrival even after receiving a visa. The official eVisa guidance recommends submitting it online within seven days before arrival. It combines arrival, customs and related traveler information and produces a QR record for presentation.
Use the same passport data, spelling and arrival details as the eVisa and airline reservation. Each accompanying traveler, including a child with an individual passport, needs the appropriate record. Save the QR code to the device and as an offline image; a cloud-only copy is inconvenient when airport Wi-Fi or roaming fails.
The e-Arrival service itself is free. A page charging for unrelated assistance should disclose that it is not a Tourist visa service fee. Completing e-Arrival does not create a visa and receiving a visa does not automatically complete e-Arrival. Think of them as two documents serving different border functions.
US passport, airline and transit checks
Airlines can deny boarding when required documents appear missing or inconsistent. Place the passport, approval certificate, e-Arrival QR, onward ticket and first accommodation details in one accessible travel folder. Do not pack the only printout in checked luggage. Keep a second copy separate from the passport.
If the itinerary transits another country, Cambodia approval does not satisfy that country's transit rules. Review whether an airport transfer changes terminals, requires baggage collection or passes immigration. The applicable rules depend on the transit country, airport, passport and ticket structure. A self-transfer can create obligations that a protected through-ticket does not.
US emergency passports and damaged passports deserve advance confirmation. The US advisory states a passport should have six months' validity beyond arrival. Missing pages, water damage or an unreadable chip can cause airline or border concern. Renew early when the document is questionable instead of relying on discretion at check-in.
Traveling with children and families
A child is not automatically included on a parent's eVisa. If the child has an individual US passport, prepare an individual visa and arrival record as required. Check every child's passport expiration independently; children's US passports commonly have shorter validity than adult passports.
Carry evidence of relationship and consent when a minor travels with one parent, relatives or a group. Requirements can vary by airline and transit country even when Cambodia does not request the document during online submission. Names that differ after marriage or adoption should be supported by relevant records.
For family applications, avoid copying one passport number into another record. Use a checklist with one row per traveler and compare every approval separately. Store approvals with clear filenames rather than five indistinguishable downloads called “evisa.pdf.” Privacy still matters: do not email unencrypted passport copies broadly or upload them to unknown form providers.
Arrival, permitted stay and departure
At immigration, present the requested records and answer questions accurately. Approval allows travel to seek entry but does not remove the officer's authority. After admission, inspect the entry notation immediately. If anything appears unclear, ask before leaving the controlled area.
The portal's “one month” stay should not be confused with the three-month use period. Schedule departure with margin rather than on an assumed final hour. Flight cancellation, illness or misunderstanding is not an automatic extension. Anyone needing longer should seek authoritative advice before the current permission expires.
The US travel advisory warns that overstay can lead to fines, arrest, deportation and future re-entry consequences. It reports a USD 10 daily fine and additional exit procedures for longer overstays. Those penalties are not a legitimate way to purchase extra vacation time. Address an accidental problem promptly with Cambodian immigration and obtain receipts for official payments.
Lost passport or changed passport after approval
An eVisa is tied to the passport details entered. If a US passport is lost, stolen, damaged or replaced before travel, do not assume an approval linked to the old number transfers to the new document. Contact the appropriate visa authority and airline before departure; a fresh application may be necessary.
Inside Cambodia, report theft to local police and contact the US Embassy in Phnom Penh for passport assistance. A replacement passport does not by itself reproduce Cambodian immigration evidence. The US advisory describes a Cambodian exit-visa process for certain overstay or replacement situations. Allow time and follow official instructions instead of arriving at the airport expecting an instant correction.
Keep encrypted copies of the biographical page, visa and entry record accessible to a trusted account. Copies do not replace originals, but they help establish numbers and dates. Never surrender a passport as collateral to a scooter-rental operator or other private business.
Common application mistakes made by US travelers
- Using the date of US departure instead of the later Cambodian arrival date.
- Entering a shortened airline-profile name rather than the complete passport name.
- Confusing KTI with an obsolete Phnom Penh airport assumption.
- Selecting Poipet for eVisa entry without checking its temporary closure notice.
- Assuming e-Arrival is included in the visa application.
- Reading three-month validity as a three-month permitted stay.
- Submitting a social-media portrait or a cropped passport screenshot.
- Paying twice because a card authorization still shows as pending.
- Believing a private service can guarantee approval or border admission.
A final five-minute comparison prevents most of these errors. Read the passport, application summary, payment page, approval PDF, e-Arrival and ticket side by side. Correct discrepancies before flying rather than hoping an airline employee or immigration officer will ignore them.
Frequently asked questions from United States citizens
Can US citizens visit Cambodia without a visa?
No. A regular US tourist passport holder needs an appropriate Cambodian visa. The temporary 2026 exemption announced for eligible PRC passport holders does not apply to US passports.
What is the official Cambodia Tourist eVisa fee for Americans?
Our Tourist Visa application service fee is USD 90. Any private assistance charge should be shown separately and does not change the government's decision.
How long does approval take?
The official normal processing time is three business days. The US travel advisory recommends applying online roughly seven calendar days ahead; one to two weeks gives a safer operational margin.
Can I show the eVisa on my phone?
Keep an offline digital copy, but also carry printed copies because the official process asks travelers to present the eVisa certificate and a phone can fail, lose power or lack connectivity.
Does eVisa allow entry at Poipet?
The official portal currently marks Poipet temporarily closed for eVisa entry. Verify again before travel and use a listed accepting port.
Do I need e-Arrival after receiving eVisa?
Yes. It is a separate arrival declaration. Submit it within seven days before arrival and save the QR record.
Can I work remotely on Tourist Type T?
Type T is a tourist category, not work authorization. Travelers planning employment, regular services or business activity should obtain advice on the correct visa and permits.
What if my passport number changes?
Do not use an approval containing an old passport number without authoritative confirmation. Contact the visa authority; a new application may be required.
Is approval guaranteed after payment?
No. Payment and submission do not guarantee visa approval or admission. Cambodian authorities retain decision-making authority.
