Quick decision table for UK passport holders
| Question | Planning answer |
|---|---|
| Visa needed? | Yes |
| Online tourist route | Tourist eVisa Type T |
| Tourist Visa Service Fee | USD 90 |
| Business Visa Service Fee | USD 105 |
| Normal processing | Three business days |
| FCDO timing advice | Apply at least four days in advance |
| Entry validity | Three months from issue |
| Stay | Up to one month, single entry |
| e-Arrival | Separate, free submission within seven days before air arrival |
The three-month period is a use-by window, not permission to remain for three months. Immigration determines the admitted stay at the border. Read the entry record before leaving the counter and retain the departure documentation.
Is the online tourist route right for this trip?
The eVisa suits a planned leisure journey to Angkor, Phnom Penh, Battambang, Kampot, the islands or friends and family. Obtaining approval before a long flight from Britain gives the airline a document to inspect and removes dependence on completing an arrival-visa transaction while tired.
Tourist Type T does not authorize employment. Paid work, teaching, recurring services, a placement, formal volunteering or operating a local enterprise calls for advice on the correct visa and work permission. A short stay is not automatically tourism merely because no Cambodian salary is paid.
British citizens of Cambodian origin, dual nationals and holders of non-standard British travel documents should ask a Cambodian mission how the rules apply. “British national” is not a single passport status. The FCDO entry guidance specifically describes people travelling on a full British citizen passport from the UK, so do not silently extend it to every British nationality category.
Passport and document checklist
- Full, complete British citizen passport valid at least six months from Cambodian arrival.
- Undamaged passport with no missing or detached pages.
- Sharp colour image of the complete biographical page and machine-readable zone.
- Recent, unfiltered, front-facing portrait on a plain background.
- Reliable email address and accepted payment card.
- Arrival date, first accommodation and exact Cambodian entry checkpoint.
- Return or onward journey and accessible insurance evidence.
FCDO guidance warns that entry is normally refused when a passport is damaged, incomplete or has missing pages. A curling cover is different from a torn identity page, but an airline employee cannot repair uncertainty at the gate. Renew a questionable document before applying and use the new number throughout.
Copy every name exactly. Do not substitute the familiar name used by a rail account or airline membership. Preserve middle names, hyphens and order as represented by the passport. Compare dates in day-month-year and year-month-day formats carefully; interface formatting can cause an otherwise accurate traveller to transpose month and day.
Application workflow from the United Kingdom
- Define the visit. Confirm genuine short tourism and the appropriate Type T category.
- Inspect the passport. Check six-month validity, all pages and physical condition.
- Verify the route. Identify the exact Cambodian airport or land border before selecting a port.
- Enter identity data. Match the passport rather than a booking profile.
- Upload clean originals. Check glare, focus, edges and machine-readable lines.
- Review price disclosure. Separate the USD 90 Tourist visa service fee from optional private support.
- Submit once. Save the reference and allow the normal review period.
- Audit the approval. Compare the PDF against the physical passport and itinerary.
- Complete e-Arrival. Submit the separate free declaration within seven days before arrival.
- Carry resilient copies. Print the certificate and save all records offline.
A form accepted by a website is not a visa approval. Payment also cannot guarantee entry. If additional information is requested, respond through the genuine case channel and retain the correspondence. Duplicate applications with different dates or spellings can make resolution harder.
When to apply from Britain
This application service lists three business days for normal processing. FCDO guidance says to apply at least four days in advance. Four days should be treated as a minimum, not an ideal target. Seven to fourteen days before departure is a more practical buffer when flights, annual leave and hotels are fixed.
Cambodian public holidays and weekends control processing, not UK bank holidays. A submission before an August bank holiday can still overlap a Cambodian closure, and Khmer New Year can affect a week that appears ordinary in a British calendar. Time-zone differences also mean the office day may have ended when an applicant submits from London.
Do not apply months too early. Approval is valid for entry for three months from issue. Calculate using the Cambodian landing date after all connections. A Sunday evening departure from Heathrow may arrive on Tuesday; it is the Tuesday date that matters for entry planning and e-Arrival.
Fees, sterling and private assistance
Our Tourist Visa application service fee is USD 90. A UK card issuer converts the transaction to sterling using its own rate and may add a non-sterling transaction fee. Consequently, the GBP amount on the statement need not match a search-engine converter. Our Tourist Visa application service fee is USD 90.
Private support can include form assistance, image checks or reminders and can carry a separate service charge. It must be identified before payment. A private operator should never describe its fee as a Tourist visa service fee or imply that it can influence Cambodian officers. Read the total, refund terms, privacy notice and merchant identity.
Some banks block unexpected international e-commerce. Make sure authentication works while abroad and avoid several rapid payment attempts. Save the checkout page and receipt. A higher fee does not create faster government processing unless an official channel explicitly says so.
Which Cambodian ports accept eVisa?
The official list currently names Techo International Airport (KTI), Siem Reap Angkor International Airport (SAI) and Sihanoukville International Airport (KOS). The listed land entries are Bavet in Svay Rieng and Tropaeng Kreal in Stung Treng. Poipet and Cham Yeam are marked temporarily closed for eVisa entry.
Many UK itineraries connect in Bangkok, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Doha, Seoul or Ho Chi Minh City. The transit airport is not the Cambodian port. Read the final flight number and airport code. KTI serves Phnom Penh; old articles or saved itineraries may refer to superseded airport information.
For a coach journey, obtain the actual checkpoint name from the operator. “Bangkok to Siem Reap” does not itself prove that the border currently accepts the traveller's document. Thailand-Cambodia border conditions have changed, so consult current FCDO and Cambodian notices shortly before travel and maintain an air or alternative-land contingency.
Completing Cambodia e-Arrival
Air travellers entering at Phnom Penh, Siem Reap or Sihanoukville international airports must complete the electronic Arrival Card within seven days before arrival, according to FCDO guidance. It is free. The declaration gathers individual, customs, health and accommodation information and generates a QR record.
Use precisely the same passport as the visa. Submit one record for each traveller as required, including children. Save the QR to the phone gallery and print it with the visa; relying on an email attachment can fail when roaming is disabled. A family should label records clearly by name.
e-Arrival is not eVisa. One does not replace the other. A third-party company may assist for a disclosed fee, but no assistance fee changes the fact that the government arrival declaration itself is free. Never enter passport data into a page merely because its advert appears above the official result.
Accommodation registration and FPCS
The Cambodian Department of Immigration uses the Foreigners Present in Cambodia System. FCDO guidance says a hotel, guesthouse or landlord should register a guest; people staying with friends, family or in their own property may need to arrange registration themselves. A Cambodian telephone number is needed for a valid self-registration.
Ask the accommodation who handles FPCS rather than assuming an online booking completes it. This matters especially for visa extensions, because failure to register can obstruct an extension. Keep the booking address consistent with the e-Arrival while recognising that an itinerary can legitimately change later.
FPCS is neither the visa nor e-Arrival. The three records serve different purposes: advance permission, arrival declaration and presence registration. Explaining them separately avoids the common assumption that one QR code completes every immigration obligation.
Flights, transit and airline document checks
At check-in, keep the passport, printed eVisa, e-Arrival QR, onward itinerary and accommodation together. Airline staff apply document rules before boarding; an approval hidden in checked baggage is of no use. Keep another copy in secure cloud storage and one separate from the passport.
A Cambodian visa says nothing about transit permission in another country. A self-transfer requiring baggage collection may force entry through that country's immigration. Check the transit authority's rules for a British citizen passport, airport, terminal change and connection length. Do not infer eligibility from another passenger's different ticket.
When returning to the United Kingdom, British citizens must carry a valid British passport or certificate of entitlement. A dual national who entered Cambodia on another passport should plan how both documents will be presented without creating mismatched airline data.
Families and children from the UK
Each child travelling on an individual British passport needs individual treatment in the visa and arrival process. Check validity because children's passports expire sooner than adult passports. A parent's approval does not automatically cover a child, and a family email address does not merge immigration records.
When one parent travels alone, carry the child's birth certificate and consent or custody evidence appropriate to the circumstances. Cambodia, the airline and transit states can ask different questions. A difference between a parent's and child's surnames is easier to explain with documents prepared before reaching the airport.
Review every family approval line by line. Spreadsheet organisation is useful, but never paste the same passport number across rows. Store passport images securely and delete unnecessary copies from shared devices after the journey.
Arrival, extensions and avoiding overstay
Present truthful answers and requested records at immigration. An eVisa permits travel to seek entry; the border officer retains authority. Once admitted, check the stamp or sticker and departure form. FCDO guidance advises ensuring the passport is stamped and retaining departure documentation.
A tourist stay is normally thirty days from entry. Anyone wanting longer should seek an extension before expiry through the competent Cambodian process. The passport must have at least six months' validity from the start of a renewal or extension, according to the UK guidance.
Overstay can lead to fines, detention and deportation. There is no responsible strategy in intentionally exceeding permission and paying later. Transport disruption does not automatically extend immigration status. Contact Cambodian immigration promptly when a genuine emergency threatens departure.
If a British passport is lost, damaged or replaced
Report loss or theft to local police and contact British consular services. A replacement travel document does not automatically contain the Cambodian entry record or match an eVisa issued to the old passport. Obtain instructions on transferring or replacing immigration evidence and any exit formalities.
Before departure, a new passport number normally means the approval details no longer match. Do not travel carrying only both passports and hope the discrepancy is accepted. Ask the visa authority whether a fresh application is required. Allow enough time for a definitive answer.
Keep encrypted copies of the identity page, approval, entry record and insurance. Copies support a consular report but never replace originals. Do not leave a passport as collateral for a vehicle, room or equipment rental.
Frequent errors by British applicants
- Applying exactly four days ahead and treating the minimum as guaranteed timing.
- Using a damaged passport or one with a missing page.
- Entering a preferred first name instead of all passport names.
- Confusing three-month visa validity with three months in Cambodia.
- Selecting a transit airport rather than the Cambodian entry port.
- Assuming Poipet currently accepts eVisa entry.
- Paying for e-Arrival without recognising that the official declaration is free.
- Ignoring FPCS registration at private accommodation.
- Believing payment guarantees approval or admission.
Compare the application, passport, approval, e-Arrival and flight booking on one screen before travel. Small discrepancies are easier to fix at home than at an airline desk.
Questions British travellers ask
Can British citizens enter Cambodia visa-free?
No. A visitor using a full British citizen passport needs a Cambodian visa. The temporary Chinese-passport pilot does not cover British passports.
How much is Tourist eVisa Type T?
This application service lists a USD 90 Tourist visa service fee. Sterling conversion and a separately disclosed private support fee are different charges.
How early should I apply?
FCDO says at least four days ahead and the normal official processing period is three business days. Seven to fourteen days provides a more useful margin.
Is e-Arrival free?
Yes. The government electronic Arrival Card is free and separate from the paid visa.
Can I enter at Poipet with eVisa?
Poipet is currently marked temporarily closed for eVisa entry. Recheck the official list before departure.
Does my hotel register me?
Hotels and guesthouses generally handle FPCS registration, but ask them. Private hosts and property owners may require a different arrangement.
Can Tourist Type T be used for work?
No. Confirm the proper business or employment route and work permit before undertaking work.
What if my passport is damaged?
FCDO warns damaged or incomplete passports are normally refused. Renew before travel rather than relying on discretion.
Is a digital certificate enough?
Keep it offline, but carry printed visa and QR copies to reduce risk from a flat battery or connectivity failure.
Primary sources
Recheck these sources before payment and departure. This is an independent information and application-support website, not a Cambodian government department.
Technical submission problems and recovery
FCDO notes that the eVisa website may not work in certain browsers. If a page freezes, save entered information, disable automatic translation, try a current mainstream browser and confirm that image files meet portal requirements. Do not keep pressing payment while bank authentication is hidden. Check email, the application account and card authorisations before deciding submission failed.
Use a private device and trusted connection for passport data. Public computers and open Wi-Fi increase privacy risk. Record the genuine reference, but never publish a passport image or receipt in a public forum. When official support is needed, describe the error precisely and include only identifiers requested through a verified channel.
Insurance and disruption planning
A visa does not cover medical treatment, evacuation, missed connections or theft. Buy insurance suitable for Cambodia, declared conditions and planned activities, and keep the assistance number offline. Read exclusions for motorbikes, alcohol, trekking and adventure activities.
Leave schedule margin before the immigration deadline. A cancelled transfer can become an overstay when departure is planned for the last permitted day. Keep emergency funds and know how to contact British consular services and the insurer, while recognising that consular staff cannot override Cambodian immigration decisions or pay private expenses.
