Decision snapshot
| Checkpoint | New Zealand traveller note |
|---|---|
| Passport used | Ordinary New Zealand passport, valid for at least six months on arrival |
| Usual holiday option | Tourist eVisa Type T when the route uses an accepted port |
| Tourist Visa Service Fee | USD 90 |
| Business Visa Service Fee | USD 105 |
| Published processing | Three business days in normal cases |
| Entry window | Three months from approval issue |
| Stay shown by portal | Up to one month, subject to the admission record |
| Entries | Single entry only |
| Separate arrival form | Cambodia e-Arrival, submitted near departure |
The entry window and the length of stay are separate ideas. A three-month visa validity period lets the traveller enter during that window. It does not create a three-month stay in Cambodia. The date shown after admission, including a v-Pass record where issued, is the practical deadline to monitor.
What Type T covers
Tourist eVisa Type T is built for short leisure travel: temple visits, Phnom Penh city breaks, coastal stays, family visits without work and similar holiday plans. It can also fit a wider Southeast Asia itinerary when Cambodia is one stop and the Cambodian arrival point appears on the current eVisa port list.
It is the wrong tool for employment, remote work arranged as a stay in Cambodia, study, residence, long assignments or repeated border runs. It is also not enough for a five-week visit if the admitted tourist stay would be only one month. A traveller who leaves Cambodia after using a single-entry Type T normally needs a new entry basis before returning.
Keep the purpose consistent. Airline checks, the visa form, e-Arrival and questions at immigration should all describe the same trip. If the real plan has changed from tourism to work or long-term business, pause and confirm the correct category before paying.
Passport and file preparation
Use the New Zealand passport that will be carried on the journey. If it expires within six months of the intended Cambodian arrival, renew first and apply with the replacement passport. The approval is tied to the passport number, so a renewal after approval can create a mismatch that must be handled through official support or a new application.
- Full colour image of the passport bio-data page.
- Portrait photo taken recently, front facing, with a plain background.
- Email inbox accessible from New Zealand, in transit and in Cambodia.
- Payment card accepted online for a US-dollar transaction.
- First Cambodian accommodation address and contact details.
- Scheduled local arrival date for the final flight or land entry into Cambodia.
- Onward or return travel evidence available for airline or border review.
Photograph the passport flat, in even light, with all four corners and the machine-readable lines visible. Do not upload a cropped screenshot from a messaging app. Names should follow the passport exactly, including middle names where the form requests the full name.
Auckland routing and date-line checks
New Zealand has no short direct hop into Cambodia. Many trips route from Auckland through Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Bangkok, Ho Chi Minh City, Hong Kong, Taipei, Sydney, Melbourne or another hub before entering Cambodia. The date on the first boarding pass may differ from the date Cambodia sees at the border.
Use the scheduled local date of arrival at the Cambodian airport or land checkpoint. For example, an Auckland departure in the evening may arrive at a transit city on a different calendar day and then reach Siem Reap or Phnom Penh later still. The International Date Line, long layovers and overnight sectors make guessing risky.
Build the visa timeline from the final Cambodia-bound segment, not from the New Zealand departure. Then compare that local Cambodian arrival date with the approved validity dates. If an airline reissues the ticket, repeat the check before e-Arrival and before boarding.
Route map for accepted ports
Current official eVisa port information lists Techo International Airport (KTI), Siem Reap Angkor International Airport (SAI) and Sihanoukville International Airport (KOS) for eVisa use. For land entry, the listed accepting checkpoints are Bavet in Svay Rieng and Tropaeng Kreal in Stung Treng. Cham Yeam and Poipet are shown as temporarily closed for eVisa entry.
Transit airports outside Cambodia do not matter for Cambodian visa eligibility. A connection in Australia, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand or Vietnam is not the port to record as Cambodian entry. Look at the last segment that actually crosses into Cambodia, then match that airport code or border name against the official list.
Overland travel needs extra precision. Tour products may say "Bangkok to Siem Reap" without naming the crossing. If the vehicle uses Poipet while Poipet is unavailable for eVisa entry, the plan needs revision or official confirmation that the status has changed.
Application sequence
- Confirm the trip is tourism. Do not use Type T to cover work, residence or an overlong stay.
- Choose the passport first. Apply with the New Zealand passport that will be presented to airlines and Cambodian immigration.
- Check six-month validity. Renew before applying if the margin is short.
- Identify the Cambodian entry point. Use the final airport or border, not a transit hub.
- Set the correct arrival date. Account for the date line, layovers and local time in Cambodia.
- Upload clean images. Review the passport scan and portrait after upload.
- Review every identity field. Passport number, names, birth date and expiry must match the document.
- Check the full price. Separate the USD 90 Tourist visa service fee from card charges or optional service costs.
- Save approval records. Keep the reference, receipt and PDF both offline and securely backed up.
- Complete e-Arrival later. Use the official arrival declaration during the seven days before reaching Cambodia.
When to submit
The Cambodian portal's normal processing estimate is three business days, but a calm plan leaves more calendar space. One to two weeks is sensible for most New Zealand departures because public holidays, image corrections, card reviews, support emails or airline schedule changes can consume time.
Applying too early can also create a problem. Since the entry validity is three months from issue, a visa approved far ahead of a later holiday may expire before the traveller reaches Cambodia. Prepare the documents early, then submit once the intended arrival fits inside the validity window.
For a late booking, do not treat an airline ticket as proof that the visa will be issued in time. Check the official status, keep evidence of payment and avoid duplicate applications unless official instructions make that necessary.
NZD card costs and payment clarity
The Tourist visa service fee for Tourist eVisa Type T is published in US dollars. A New Zealand debit or credit card may show the transaction in NZD after the card network and bank apply their exchange rate. Many cards also add a foreign-currency or offshore-service charge, so the statement amount can be different from a simple currency-converter result.
Independent assistance may be useful for file checks or application support, but it is separate from the Cambodian Tourist visa service fee. Before paying any provider, read the total amount, currency, company identity, privacy terms and refund terms. A private service can help organise an application; it cannot guarantee approval or border admission.
If payment appears pending, check email and application status before trying again. Multiple attempts can lead to repeated card authorisations or separate records that are difficult to reconcile while travelling.
eVisa, e-Arrival and v-Pass
The eVisa is the advance visa approval. Cambodia e-Arrival is the digital arrival declaration. v-Pass is an electronic immigration record that may be issued after entry instead of, or alongside, a visible passport stamp. Completing one item does not complete the others.
Submit e-Arrival through the official arrival portal within seven days before reaching Cambodia. Keep the confirmation with the eVisa approval, first hotel address and onward itinerary. After immigration, save the v-Pass or other admission record and note the date by which the traveller must leave or take a lawful extension step.
Be careful with look-alike websites. If a site asks for passport data, understand whether it is the government portal or an independent service and whether a support fee is being charged.
Typical New Zealand travel patterns
Auckland to Siem Reap via Singapore
The Cambodian port is SAI if the final flight lands at Siem Reap Angkor International Airport. Singapore is only a transit point. Use the scheduled Siem Reap arrival date and complete e-Arrival shortly before that date.
North Island departure with a Bangkok stop
If Cambodia is entered by air, check the Cambodian airport code on the last flight. If the Bangkok stay continues overland to Siem Reap, ask the operator which checkpoint is used because Poipet is currently shown as unavailable for eVisa entry.
Cambodia between Vietnam and Thailand
A single-entry Type T covers one Cambodian entry. Leaving for Vietnam or Thailand normally ends that use. A second Cambodia leg needs separate planning even if the combined Cambodian days are below one month.
Family holiday during school breaks
Every family member needs their own passport-linked record. Check each child's passport expiry, prepare consent paperwork where relevant and keep insurance documents accessible to both adults travelling with the group.
Families, children and mixed passports
Children, including infants, are not covered by a parent's approval. Each traveller should have a separate application or entry basis matched to the passport carried. Families living in New Zealand may include Australian, British, Indian, Chinese, South African or other passports, and Cambodian requirements follow the passport presented rather than the family's New Zealand address.
For a child travelling with one parent, grandparents, a school group or another adult, carry relationship evidence and any consent documentation required by airlines or relevant authorities. Visa approval and child-travel safeguards are separate checks.
Create a simple document table before departure: passport number, expiry, eVisa reference if used, e-Arrival confirmation, insurance policy and emergency contact. This reduces confusion at check-in when several travellers have similar names or different surnames.
Health, insurance and SafeTravel preparation
New Zealand travellers should read the SafeTravel Cambodia page before booking non-refundable plans and again near departure. Advice can change because of security conditions, weather, health issues, demonstrations, road safety concerns or border developments. Registering travel details with SafeTravel is a practical step for receiving official updates and helping consular contact if a serious incident occurs.
Travel insurance should cover Cambodia, planned activities, medical evacuation, disrupted connections and the full itinerary, including transit countries where relevant. Carry the insurer's emergency assistance number offline. A low-cost policy that excludes scooter injuries, adventure activities or pre-existing conditions may not match the trip being planned.
Visa approval does not mean every route is advisable. Check warnings for border areas, transport safety and local law. Keep copies of the passport, approval, e-Arrival, insurance certificate and emergency contacts separate from the physical passport.
Errors that cause avoidable trouble
- Using the Auckland departure date instead of the Cambodian local arrival date.
- Applying with a passport that will be renewed before travel.
- Missing a middle name or transposing passport digits.
- Treating the three-month entry window as permission to stay three months.
- Planning two Cambodian entries with a single-entry approval.
- Forgetting the separate e-Arrival declaration.
- Booking an overland route through a checkpoint not accepting eVisa.
- Uploading glare-heavy passport images or filtered portraits.
- Assuming a support fee is the Tourist visa service fee.
- Using a tourist visa for employment or long remote-work arrangements.
Boarding and arrival folder
Before leaving New Zealand, assemble one offline folder and one paper set. Include the physical passport used in the application, eVisa approval, e-Arrival confirmation, first accommodation details, onward or return travel, insurance certificate and emergency contacts. Checked baggage is not available when airline staff ask for documents.
At check-in, present the same passport number shown on the approval. At Cambodian immigration, answer questions in line with the stated tourist purpose and route. If the officer issues or references an electronic v-Pass, save it immediately and use that admitted-until date for the departure reminder.
If the itinerary changes after boarding documents were prepared, review three items again: Cambodian entry port, Cambodian arrival date and whether another Cambodia entry has been added. These are the changes most likely to affect a New Zealand traveller's paperwork.
Frequently asked questions
Do New Zealanders use visa-free entry for Cambodia?
For a standard holiday on an ordinary New Zealand passport, plan for a valid Cambodian visa or other official entry basis. Tourist eVisa Type T is the common online option when the port accepts it.
What fee does the official Type T page show?
The Cambodian eVisa portal lists USD 90 for the Tourist eVisa Type T Tourist visa service fee. NZD conversion, bank fees and private support charges are separate.
How many days should I allow for approval?
The normal official estimate is three business days. Applying one to two weeks before travel is usually more comfortable, provided the arrival remains inside the three-month validity window.
Which arrival date should I enter after leaving Auckland?
Use the scheduled local date when the final sector reaches Cambodia, not the date the aircraft leaves New Zealand or a transit country.
Can I stay three months because the visa is valid three months?
No. Three months is the entry-validity window. The tourist stay is listed separately as up to one month and the admission record controls the actual deadline.
Is e-Arrival included in the eVisa approval?
No. e-Arrival is a separate Cambodian arrival declaration submitted within seven days before arrival through the official arrival portal.
Can my family share one application?
No. Each traveller, including a baby or child, needs an individual passport-linked application or entry basis.
Can I use Poipet with an eVisa?
Poipet is currently marked temporarily closed for eVisa entry. Confirm the checkpoint before booking an overland trip.
Should I register with New Zealand SafeTravel?
Registration is a sensible preparation step. It helps New Zealand officials provide updates and contact support during significant overseas incidents.
